Global Mobile Radio
PTT Global Mobile Radio (GMR)
Global Mobile Radio (GMR) service allows instant communication either on a one-to-one basis or as a broadcast to a group of people using Push-to-Talk technology on their mobile devices.
Push-to-talk is quicker than a phone call because there is no number to dial. To make a call, the caller JUST pushes a button on the handheld and talk's. It is similar to a walkie-talkie but has the advantage of almost unlimited coverage as it uses the global GSM mobile network.
Global Mobile Radio (GMR) also integrates seamlessly with your Local Area Network (LAN) so that office-based users can keep in contact with field based staff using a PC.
Features:
Push To Talk (PTT)
Voice communication at the push of a button. Communicate privately on a one to one basis, or have discussion with the whole team on an instant conference call.
PC / Mobile Integration
Enables office staff to keep in contact with field-based staff using their PCs instead of a Global Mobile Radio (GMR) handheld.
Wide Network Coverage
The Global Mobile Radio (GMR) service is available in the UK. Calls can be made between Global Mobile Radio (GMR) mobile devices almost anywhere in the world.
Benefits
Instant Communications
Speak once - Inform many
Reduced costs
Because a Global Mobile Radio (GMR) enabled mobile device is a regular phone as well as a walkie-talkie, it avoids the need to provide staff with a radio as well as their mobile. This saves equipment and maintenance costs, as well as being more convenient for users.
Communication is also more efficient. Global Mobile Radio (GMR) works by sending Radio packets over the GSM network rather than setting up a traditional phone call. This means that the cost of a call is based on time spent actually speaking (the number of data packets transmitted) rather than the elapsed duration of the conversation.
Increased control
Organisations can provide Global Mobile Radio (GMR) mobile devices to all staff - even temporary staff – safe in the knowledge that the phones cannot be abused to make non work related phone calls. Handhelds can be configured for data-only use so that PTT will continue to work but users are unable to make phone calls.
Improved productivity
Global Mobile Radio (GMR) allows groups of workers to keep in constant touch with the team even if dispersed around the country. Global Mobile Radio (GMR) handhelds can be also fitted with earpieces with PTT buttons - this allows calls to be made and received without touching the device.
As backup to an existing radio network
Many organisations, particularly the emergency services, depend heavily on their radio communication systems to co-ordinate staff. Because Global Mobile Radio (GMR) uses the GSM network, it is ideal as an alternative high availability service in the event of the primary radio network failing.
Examples / Case Studies
Hospitality
Using Global Mobile Radio (GMR) mobile phones, hotel staff can work more efficiently. For example:
1 Reception can quickly locate a driver to collect a guest from the airport
2 Housekeeping can call security to help a guest locked out of their room
3 Hotel management can monitor bar stock levels and order immediate replenishment when required
Technical Support
With Global Mobile Radio (GMR), field staff can be kept in constant touch with support and operational staff. For example:
1 A on-site technician can keep in constant contact with technical support staff to resolve a problem. The call could last for many hours until the issue has been resolved, but without the associated costs of a lengthy mobile phone call.
2 A Network Operations Centre is able to immediately page all available support staff in the event of an service impacting incident. This is quicker and more efficient than calling the mobiles of on-call staff, and the many-to-many mode of Global Mobile Radio (GMR) allows technical staff to confer with each other to quickly resolve the problem.
